Harriers relay teams track success all way to London Stadium

Three out of four sprint relay teams from Croydon Harriers won their races staged at London’s Olympic stadium on Saturday, part of the international Diamond League meeting staged just a week before the Paris Games, with one of the squads delivering a spectacularly quick club record.

Record-breakers: Croydon Harriers’ under-17s men’s relay squad after racing at the London Stadium on Saturday

The Croydon youngsters were performing on probably the biggest stage in their sport outside of the Olympics themselves, and the London Diamond League meeting was a sell-out 60,000 crowd, with many track fans and spectators in the stadium by the time of the age group relays.

The under-15s girls quartet of Saray-Destiny Crosdale, Cassielle Murray, Gabby Reid and Shivelle Marshall won the opening Club Connect 4x100metres, clocking 48.67seconds, the fastest time in this age group in five years by a Croydon team.

Croydon Harriers also won both under-17s 4x100s. Atarah Kenton, Alison Omoregie, Kelly Ajayi and Kaiya Ashitey won the women’s race in a season’s best of 47.93sec.

The sensational club record came in the under-17 men’s race thanks to Farrell Fabusiwa, Ethan Cort, N’Ziah Burrell and Malachi Eloundou-Amados, who clocked 41.70sec.

National champ: Lia Bonsu after taking triple jump gold

The previous best was set in 2016, when the quartet included Romell Glave, who this year has gone on to win the 100metres bronze medal at the European Championships.

The Croydon Harriers under-15 boys – Anjelho Macabee-Rose, Micah Salman, Isaiah Easy-Riley and Kalyvn Mills – placed third in their race in 44.64sec.

Meanwhile, at the England championships staged in Birmingham at the weekend, Croydon’s Lia Bonsu won gold in the under-20 women’s triple jump with 12.05metres, while there was silver for Tyvon Innis in the under-23s men’s 100m in 10.71 and bronze for Jack Ennis in the under-23 men’s high jump with 2.02m.
