The Wilderness, the large garden of the MHA Hall Grange care home on Shirley Church Road, is having a midwinter festival of sorts this Saturday, when there will be singing and dancing in the orchard, and some apple juice (“mulled”) may be drunk.

Make some noise: there will be signing and a’wassailing at Hall Grange this Saturday
It is wassailing time, the time of year when ancient, some say pagan, rituals are performed around fruit trees in the fervent hope that they will ensure a bumper harvest later in the year.
Starting at 11am, “We’ll be making ivy crowns, dancing, singing, waking up our apple trees and blessing them to ensure a bountiful harvest,” the organisers say.
The event is free and there is no need to book: “Just turn up with your pots and pans to make some noise!” Light refreshments, including mulled apple juice and homemade cakes, will be available.
