Mitcham killing: police failed to deliver the ‘complete picture’

Three men were sentenced at the Old Bailey yesterday for the April 2023 Mitcham Common killing of Tyrese Miller, with the Metropolitan Police forced to concede that the outcome of the trial failed to provide the victim’s family “with the complete picture that they had wished for”.

Denzel Kwateng, of Parkway, New Addington, was jailed for a minimum of 16 years, for manslaughter, possession of a firearm and ammunition with intent to endanger life, and perverting the course of justice.

The court heard that in 2021, Kwateng had killed another man, 17-year-old Denardo Samuels-Brooks, but then had been acquitted of both murder and manslaughter.

On this occasion, having shot Miller in the chest at point-blank range, Kwateng was convicted of the lesser charge, rather than murder, after claiming that the gun had gone off by accident. Judge Sarah Munro KC issued a life sentence, saying, “You showed a reckless disregard for the consequences of your actions.” Continue reading

Take a journey back in time with Bus Museum’s Heritage Day

Transport geeks can enjoy a bit of a busman’s holiday next weekend, when heritage London Transport buses take to the roads of south London to provide a ride back into the 1950s and ’60s.

Request stop: there will be a special service next Saturday

Harking back to an era of rickets and rationing, city-wide smogs and a title-winning Spurs team (these buses go back a verrrry long way…), the London Bus Museum is staging a Heritage Open Day on a couple of routes between Lewisham, Bromley and Chislehurst on Saturday, September 14.

Many of a certain age still hanker after the age of the Routemaster, with its open deck and two-person crew, including a cheery conductor to take your fares while the bus was on the move, and its predecessor the RT, and in between the regular 2024 services running on the day, these will be the heritage vehicles serving the 261 and 61 routes between 10am and 5pm. ‘I need to deliver league title’ says new Trams boss Gonnella

NON-LEAGUE NEWS: It’s been a helter-skelter start to the season, with the Rams knocked out of the FA Cup and struggling for points in the Isthmian League, while, as ANDREW SINCLAIR reports, neighbours Croydon FC are looking solid

Good start: Croydon FC have won four of their first five games under Antonio Gonnella

For all the excitement coming out of Croydon Athletic’s Mayfield Stadium of late – the smart new Adidas kit, updated club badge, shirt sponsors and the signing of former Palace defender Pape Souare – it’s fair to say that the local non-league club which has enjoyed its best start to a season in many years has been Croydon FC under their new boss, Antonio Gonnella.

After five games, Croydon sit top of the Southern Counties East League Division One table, and Gonnella has stated that his objective is to deliver the league title and much-needed promotion at the end of the season.

Gonnella was on the coaching team at last season’s SCEFL Div1 winners Whyteleafe, where his brother was joint manager.

“Achieving the league title was a great experience and one that I needed to deliver in the role I’m in now,” Gonnella told Inside Croydon.

“Last season was a great learning experience for me, working with top players and also my brother. I was learning as a coach about how to deal with different characters. Continue reading

Ha’way the lads and lasses: 60,000 are expected to start Sunday’s Great North Run, including many running for NHS charities

Sunday’s Great North Run, Britain’s biggest road running event, will include 600 runners taking part to raise funds for NHS charities. One of them will be Coulsdon’s Antony Tiernan.

Funds raised during the half-marathon will provide vital support to the NHS, whether that’s transforming green spaces outside hospitals into therapeutic environments, providing VR technology to help staff training, or well-being zones for staff coming off busy shifts or to benefit patients, staff and communities. Reminder: tram services to Wimbledon disrupted, Sep 6-8

More closures to the tram network have been announced by Transport for London – this time for September 6 to 8 on the stretch of track from Mitcham Junction to Wimbledon.

The closures are while Network Rail conducts its own maintenance work in the area of Wimbledon Station, which requires power to be turned off on the tram network.

During the closure, TfL will use the time to conduct its own maintenance work to tracks near the Dundonald Road tram stop.

It is, though, unusual for such works to be conducted once the school holidays are over.

In the terse TfL statement, posted on some trams and stations in the past day or so, no timings are offered for the return to normal service.

Tram services between Wimbledon and Mitcham Junction will stop at 11.50pm on Friday, September 6. Continue reading

Selhurst drugs dealer given seven years after police guns raid

Sentenced: Taymullah Wilson

Serial offender Taymullah Wilson, of Broadway Avenue, Selhurst, was last week sentenced to a seven-year jail term after pleading guilty to possession of a firearm and ammunition and to supplying drugs.

Detective Inspector Ray Sekalongo said: “Wilson is a repeat offender who once more has been convicted of a firearms offence, alongside serious drugs matters.

“We have zero tolerance for anyone who acts in this way. I hope Wilson’s imprisonment sends out a strong message to those who choose to handle firearms – you will be arrested, put before the courts and held to account for your actions.” Continue reading

Family of teen murdered in Sutton are ‘mocked’ by suspect

Murder victim: Ilyas Habibi

The man wanted for the murder of teenager Ilyas Habibi outside Sutton Station last December was able to fly out of the country from Gatwick due to a police “computer error”.

And the suspect has subsequently messaged Habibi’s grieving family to “joke” about how he left his 17-year-old victim “choking on his blood”.

Habibi was stabbed in the neck and killed near Sutton Station in the evening of December 5.

He was among 105 homicides in London in 2023.

Ol’ Brown Nose is back! Philp jumps into latest Tory racism row

Is there anything ‘Congo’ Chris won’t do to seek a promotion at Westminster? ‘No’ appears to be the answer after his return to the Newsnight studio, reports WALTER CRONXITE, political editor

Sniffing out a new job opportunity: Chris Philp is regarded as the Tories’ go-to chap when they need someone to take a beating on national television

The Croydon MP who was once described as “a nose in search of a bum” appears to have alighted on a new posterior for his attention.

And “Congo” Chris Philp has immediately propelled himself into controversy over Tory leadership contender Kemi Badenoch’s Islamophobic comments.

Philp, the Conservative MP for Croydon South who as a Treasury minister notoriously helped to crash the British economy during Liz Truss’s disastrous 49 days as Prime Minister, resurfaced on national broadcast media last night, shortly after announcing that he would be supporting Badenoch’s bid to become Tory Party leader.

With an endorsement like that, what could possibly go wrong? Continue reading

London’s transport authority under attack by cyber criminals

Transport for London is the latest public body or large corporation to be targeted by cyber criminals. The cyber attack has prompted TfL to seek help from the National Crime Agency.

TfL sent out advisory notes by email last night to hundreds of thousands of passengers: “We are currently dealing with an ongoing cyber security incident. At present, there is no evidence that any customer data has been compromised and there has been no impact on TfL services.

“The security of our systems and customer data is very important to us, and we have taken immediate action to prevent any further access to our systems. Continue reading

Evans above! Labour’s General Secretary to stand down

WALTER CRONXITE, political editor, on the end of an error

Nice drop of red: David Evans

David Evans, the former key aide to Tony Bliar and one-time Croydon businessman who was installed as party General Secretary after Keir Starmer became Labour leader, is to stand down from the job later this month. The predicted elevation to a place in the House of Lords cannot be too distant.

Evans became a notorious figure in Croydon politics, through his close personal relationships with the council’s Labour leadership, including Alison Butler, with whom he fathered a child, as well as his part in masterminding Labour’s 2014 Town Hall election victory, and the hundreds of thousands of pounds of council contracts that flowed the way of his The Campaign Company in the months thereafter.

Evans’s close associate, Tony Newman, the leader of Croydon Council from 2014 to 2020, has been on “administrative suspension” by the Labour Party since early 2021, shortly after the financial collapse of the council. Under Evans, disciplinary action against Newman has never been actioned.

In his time as Labour General Secretary, Evans also introduced the controversial – and easily manipulated – Anonyvoter online election system, without ever going to anything resembling a competitive tendering process, but instead taking on a package from a company jointly owned by a Croydon Labour councillor. Council acts against rogue landlords… just not in Croydon

In a landmark move, Merton Council has taken action against a rogue landlord by seizing 18 private rented flats at locations around the south London borough, after months of tenant complaints were ignored.

This move marks what is believed to be the first such use of landlord licensing powers in the country.

Labour-controlled Merton’s action occurred in the same week that, across the capital, the former leader of another London borough was being exposed as a rogue landlord himself.

Jas Athwal, who owns 15 properties in Ilford within the borough of Redbridge, was exposed for charging rents from tenants forced to live in homes infested with ants and with black mould on the walls. Athwal had been elected as MP for Ilford South in July. Continue reading

All change: the 45 route, will no longer run north of Camberwell Green, and the 118 won’t run any more at all

Closing libraries is a sign of ‘failed administration’ – say Tories

Education correspondent GENE BRODIE on the ever-present threat to the borough’s public libraries, with a doom-laden, long-delayed council report expected next week

Under threat: Sanderstead is one of four libraries that Mayor Jason Perry wants to close – backed by Tory MP Chris Philp

At the council cabinet meeting to be held on September 25 (the first such meeting held by our hard-working councillors since July 15), our £82,000 per year powerless mayor, Jason Perry, is expected to decide the fate of the borough’s public libraries – downgrading half of them, including closing four of them.

The latest libraries consultation was conducted at the start of the year, but the reports arising from that public consultation were withheld by Tory Mayor Perry, in case it might damage the General Election prospects of Croydon South’s Conservative MP, Chris Philp. We are now told that the official papers from the consultation should be available on the council website next Monday, September 9.

No one is expecting “good news”. Continue reading

Investigation after man found dead at South Croydon house fire

The police and London Fire Brigade are investigating the cause of a house fire in South Croydon which claimed the life of a man.

Six people had already evacuated a neighbouring home on Chelsham Road before the Brigade arrived, just after noon on Saturday.

Part of the ground floor of an end-of-terrace house was damaged by the fire, according to the LFB.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus found a man in the home, who was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.”

Tufnell sparked complaints and compliments in Queensland

SUNDAY SUPPLEMENT: There has been a Vicar of Croydon for more than a thousand years. Before next week’s formal installation service for the latest holder of that historic title, DAVID MORGAN has delved into the archives and found an earlier Bishop who became the vicar

High office: Edward Tufnell, the Bishop of Brisbane, who was Vicar of Croydon 1879-1882

The historic title of Vicar of Croydon is to be restored in a special service at the Minster next Sunday, when Canon Andrew Bishop becomes the latest to hold the office in a line of priests that stretches back more than one thousand years.

One of Rev Canon Bishop’s intriguing predecessors, who I found as I scoured the Minster archives recently, was Rev Edward Wyndham Tufnell.

Tufnell was the Vicar and Rural Dean of Croydon between 1879 and 1882.

Aged 65 when he came to Croydon, his life and career in the church was, even by Victorian standards, a rollercoaster. The details read like chapters from a Trollope novel. Continue reading

Autism Alert Cards available to help police and the public

The Metropolitan Police is promoting its Autism Alert Card, to help autistic people better interact with officers across the capital.

The card can be used by all autistic people and includes basic information such as the person’s name and contact details for an appropriate adult. The card also details information about autism and provides practical advice for officers.

There is also an A5-sized booklet version of the card, which goes into more detail about how the officer should communicate with the person, including how to help the person and any relevant information about them.   Continue reading

Police out on ‘patrol’ for animal charity after traumatic call-out

Police appeal: officers are taking part in a 15km Thames trek for their furry friends

Police officers in Croydon are taking part in a 15-mile charity fund-raising walk next month for Croydon Animal Samaritans – as a response to the traumatic scenes some witnessed when on an emergency call at the start of August.

The police arrived at a flat on Cherry Orchard Road, not far from East Croydon Station, in the late afternoon “to carry out arrest enquiries in connection with an ongoing investigation”.

It marked the start of a nine-hour stand-off in which a man, in clear distress, barricaded himself into his flat. The scene was attended by several police vehicles, as well as specially trained officers from the Tactical Support Group, as well as the London Fire Brigade.

A police cordon was set-up and the busy road was shut off for a time. At one point, the man threw two dogs from the fourth-floor balcony.

The man was eventually arrested “on suspicion of animal cruelty, criminal damage, indecent exposure and breach of a court order”. He was detained under the Mental Health Act and taken to a south London hospital. Continue reading
