Bear Grylls, mountaineer, sailor, adventurer, and Chief Scout will be dropping in to Croydon, literally, on May 11, when he is planning to arrive for a visit to a local scouting centre by helicopter.
A former SAS reservist who has climbed Mount Everest, Grylls’ other action-packed pursuits have included circumnavigating the British Isles on a jet ski, rowing naked in a bathtub along the Thames, and crossing the north Atlantic in an unpowered open boat.
In between his work as a television presenter, Grylls has been Chief Scout since 2009, making him the youngest to hold the office since the role was created for Robert Baden-Powell in 1920.
When he comes to Croydon, Grylls will be landing by helicopter in the playing fields of St John’s primary school in Shirley, before setting off to visit the Pinewoods Scout Centre, which has six acres of mixed woodland just off Shirley Church Road.
