Palace agree to Holmesdale ‘wall of noise’ at Selhurst Park
Crystal Palace’s loudest fans, the Holmesdale Fanatics, look like they may get their wish to create “a wall of noise” at Selhurst Park from next season, after the club issued a statement which could avoid a boycott of home games by some supporters.

The support from the Holmesdale Fanatics creates Selhurst’s unique atmosphere
The Holmesdale Fanatics are felt by many to make the noise and atmosphere which has characterised Selhurst Park in the past couple of seasons, their enthusiasm, energy and colourful banners setting the ground apart from the more restrained, too-corporate nature of so many Premier League clubs.
It is reckoned that around 100 Palace fans make up the Fanatics. They are usually positioned behind the goal in the Holmesdale Stand, near the corner flag. Continue reading

BINMAGEDDON!: Celeb Sawalha tells council ‘Get it sorted!’
Croydon Council and their rubbish contractors at Veolia could be in deep poo now.

Watch out Tony Newman… Nadia Sawalha makes her impassioned, EastEnders-style video appeal
Nadia Sawalha is on their case.
The former EastEnders star posted an impassioned appeal to the council yesterday, claiming that she and her friends have been ill-served by the new recycling regime, which was introduced at the start of the month.
Croydon council leader Tony Newman and chief exec Jo Negrini had better be afraid. Very afraid.
It is the kind of social media activity which can go viral, and Sawalha, popular with daytime TV viewers through her appearances on the panel of Loose Women, certainly has a way of making a strong case.
Delivering her 25-second scene as if from behind the bar of Albert Square’s Queen Vic pub, Sawalha’s message is loud and clear: “Get it sorted!” Continue reading
BINMAGEDDON!: Croydon shows its commitment to recycling
PICTURE EXCLUSIVE: In the week when the council launched a Blue Planet-style video to get people to take greater care over how they dump plastic waste, in the Clocktower buildings next to the Town Hall, recycling boxes have been taped over. KEN LEE reports
This is a photograph, taken this week in the foyer of the Croydon Clocktower, right next to the Town Hall itself, that demonstrates Croydon Council’s real commitment to recycling.
It is a perfect example of the difference between everyday reality for residents dealing with rubbish contractors Veolia, and the council’s spin.
The taped-off recycling boxes sit there, testament to the hypocrisy of a local authority which is patronising Council Tax-payers over recycling, just as it is sending hundreds of thousands of tons of waste to the Viridor incinerator at Beddington, which has been seen to fire up in earnest this week.
Whyteleafe head to appeal with FA Cup future at stake
NON-LEAGUE NEWS: It has been a week of turmoil off the pitch, with Whyteleafe being kicked out of the FA Cup for fielding a banned player – a matter which has been subject to an appeal hearing on Friday morning – and Croydon FC’s young manager, Craig Davies (pictured right), deciding to resign the tough job with the club rock bottom of the Southern Counties East League Premier Division after another home defeat last Saturday, 0-1 to Bearsted.
With another home fixture coming up on Saturday (a 3pm kick-off at Croydon Arena against Deal Town), the Trams had yet to announce a replacement manager.
Tonight, the club issued a statement saying, “We are still working on the prospect of appointing a new manager for the weekend. There is a lot of work still to do to get everything on track but we are all committed to it.”
Meanwhile, here’s our weekly round-up from the area’s non-league sides, including Whyteleafe boss Harry Hudson’s account of what he calls “the most disappointing week of my career”. Continue reading
Police make two arrests in drugs swoop on Wandle Park
Local police staged a special operation in Wandle Park yesterday, making two arrests and issuing one penalty notice, as they responded to residents’ concerns over increasing incidents of anti-social behaviour and drug-dealing.

The knife recovered in the police’s ‘action day’ around Wandle Park
According to the Waddon ward police, today they are making a submission to have two CCTVs installed around the park to assist in crime control in the area, where last month there was an attack on a woman, which is being investigated as a rape case.
According to a police source, “Yesterday we ran an action day at West Croydon and Wandle Park with a large number of officers.”
The police made one arrest for “immigration offices”, one arrest for possession with intent to supply, one knife was recovered from 15 stop and searches, and one penalty notice for disorder was issued to someone in possession of cannabis.
“We are also attending the Joint Action Group Meeting this afternoon where we will be applying to have CCTV fitted at both ends of Westfield Road,” the police said. Continue reading
Corbyn’s ‘commonsense socialism’ is creating real change

Jeremy Corbyn arrived on stage in Liverpool yesterday to ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’. It’s not a theme familiar to Theresa Mayhem’s party
CROYDON COMMENTARY: The Labour Party’s annual conference ended in Liverpool with progress being made, writes DAVID WHITE
“I am a socialist and one day so will the Labour Party be.”
Those were the words of Donald Soper, the Methodist minister, socialist and pacifist. If he were around today, I think he would have enjoyed Labour’s 2018 Conference in the great city of Liverpool.
Jeremy Corbyn’s standing among Labour Party activists is stronger than ever. His ideas of “commonsense socialism” and his honesty and decency have struck a chord with many voters. Continue reading
Valuable Stuart Devlin collection goes on auction in Selsdon
The latest large sale staged by TV auctioneer Catherine Southon next Wednesday will feature a collection of work by the world-famous silversmith, Stuart Devlin.

Some of the treasure hoard of Stuart Devlin items up for auction in Selsdon next week
The auction, being staged at Selsdon’s Farleigh Court Golf Club on October 3, will also be filmed by the BBC as part of its Children In Need Bargain Hunt special.
Wednesday’s featured lots come from a private collection, including a large collection of Devlin’s distinctive “surprise eggs”, plus a complete set of the Christmas boxes, where each one is one of the 12 days of Christmas – only 100 sets of these are known to exist.
Also included is a range of items that would look perfect on any dining table such as silver gilt beakers and goblets as well as other domestic wear including cruets, trays and flat wear. Estimates of the likely sale prices range from £100 up to £6,000.
“We are extremely excited to be auctioning this incredible and diverse collection which perfectly illustrates Devlin’s creative talent and unique design,” Southon told Inside Croydon. “Each item is beautifully crafted and demonstrates Devlin’s great skill as a silversmith and goldsmith coupled with his sense of amusement and intrigue.” Continue reading

Town Hall meeting told to expect 4% Council Tax increase
Our political editor WALTER CONXITE on an admission from the council’s finance chief that they have little idea how to plan the borough’s budgets
A Town Hall meeting has been told to expect a 4 per cent hike in Council Tax next year, as the borough tries to max out on local tax increases to make ends meet as government austerity cuts bite ever deeper.
The council needs to find £26million in savings in the next four years to balance its books, yet the council cabinet member in charge of finances admitted he has no idea what the central government financial settlement with the borough will be after next year.
Councillor Simon Hall, the borough’s finance chief, was presenting the Medium Term Financial Strategy at last night’ council cabinet meeting, setting out the financial outlook of the council over the next four years. Continue reading
Norbury park’s friends group call for greater police powers
Anti-social behaviour, littering, and heavy drinking and substance abuse in and around a public park has prompted residents to call on Croydon Council to impose a Public Space Protection Order on Norbury Hall Park.

Friends of Norbury Hall Park collecting petition signatures earlier this month
The Friends of Norbury Hall Park are seeking signatories to a petition which seeks, they say, “to provide local police with greater powers to stop large groups gathering in the park to drink excessive amounts of alcohol”.
The idea that the police need “greater powers” may seem odd to some. PSPOs, however, do allow councils to hire private security contractors to patrol areas, with powers to impose on-the-spot fines of £100 or more for offences as seemingly trivial as dropping chewing gum or a cigarette butt.
According to the friends group, the main problems in Norbury Hall Park include “copious amounts of litter; in particular alcohol bottles and cans, as well as laughing gas canisters and excrement; noise and anti-social behaviour emanating from the park, particularly at night; groups of drinkers making people feel unsafe in the park; drugs being openly consumed and sold in the park”. Wandle Park concerns after rape, drug deals, gangs and arson
There is growing anxiety among residents and park users, with some beginning to regard Wandle Park as “a no-go zone”.

After a £3.5m investment, Wandle Park was supposed to be a town centre oasis of calm
As well as an alleged rape attack in the park last month, which is under police investigation, Wandle Park has become notorious as a gathering place for drug dealers, children’s play equipment has been destroyed by vandals, and last week armed gangs gathered in the park for what is suggested was some kind of “turf war”.
And now the council officer responsible for over-seeing community activities in and around the park has announced that he is to leave the job at the end of this month, with no replacement planned. Continue reading

BRIAN GRANVILLE, our veteran non-league football correspondent, on the latest blow at Croydon Arena
They have no chairman, no points and now they have no manager: things can surely only get better for Croydon FC.
With the season barely a month old, Craig Davies, the club’s young manager, announced his resignation via social media last night.
“After consideration I’ve decided to step down as manager of Croydon FC,” Davies tweeted.
“Tough job from off and not worked how we wanted it to.” Continue reading
