Croydon short-changed with £600,000 from homelessness fund

On World Homeless Day, the government has announced a £84million cash injection to help councils support rough sleepers and children and families experiencing homelessness this winter.

Rough times: today’s government announcement has been broadly welcomed, but has Croydon missed out on the money it needs again?

And while London’s 32 boroughs and the City of London are set to receive £36.5million from that pot, Croydon’s share is less than £600,000.

The government money is to be used to help families living in temporary accommodation with essentials such as food, school travel and laundry.

There are a record number of households living in temporary accommodation across England, including nearly 170,000 children, figures which have only increased in the past year, since Labour entered government.

In the past week, the Museum of Homelessness revealed that 1,611 people died while homeless in this country in 2024.

Between them, London’s councils are reckoned to be spending £5.5million per day to fulfil their legal duties to provide accommodation for the homeless, one of the biggest pressures on budgets for cash-strapped authorities such as Croydon. Continue reading

Business lukewarm to ‘charter for chaos’ on pubs’ later hours

Business leaders across the capital have given a cautious welcome to an government review of pub opening hours – a move which could see local councils stripped of some of their licensing powers.

Open all hours: Croydon’s Boozepark is likely to welcome later opening hours during football’s 2026 World Cup

“Pubs and bars are the beating heart of our communities”, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said yesterday, as a four-week consultation was launched to consider the recommendations of the Licensing Task Force, which wants a streamlining of licensing for venues and the slashing alcohol duty.

Currently, local authorities grant licences with strict operating hours which venues must follow, in an effort to reduce the risk of antisocial behaviour blighting the lives of residents. It is these regulations which enforce the 11pm “last orders” rule in most pubs most of the time.

But those working in the hospitality sector fear that whatever regulatory change might come from the consultation, it will be too little and too late. Continue reading

Passengers must travel to end of the line to Meet the Manager

Transport for London says it wants to hear what you have to say about its tram network and the service it provides.

End of the line: TfL is staging a ‘Meet the Manager’ session at Wimbledon next week

Given the recent record of urgent engineering closures and a power cut at its Therapia Lane depot last month, it could make for an interesting dialogue.

The event, though, is not being staged in Croydon, or New Addington, which has suffered more than its fair share of tram non-service in recent times. The event is taking place next week at the other end of the line, at Wimbledon Station. Continue reading

iC subscribers get 20% off book that’s rocked Downing Street

Inside Croydon’s paying subscribers qualify for a massive 20% discount on a new book which has sent shockwaves through Downing Street and Westminster.

The Fraud: Keir Starmer, Morgan McSweeney and the Crisis of British Democracy has already seen at least one aide to the Prime Minister forced to resign his influential job at No10.

And the book has not even been published yet.

Described as the “devastating tell-all book that could end Keir Starmer”, The Fraud is written by investigative journalist Paul Holden.

Holden has spent years researching the cover-up around £800,000-worth of dodgy donations which were never properly declared to the authorities – a near-£1million fraud which threatens to dog, and possibly sink, Starmer’s leadership.

At the centre of the scandal is a shadowy organisation called Labour Together and two of its powerbrokers: Morgan McSweeney, a former Lambeth Council official who worked for a public relations company based in Croydon, and Steve Reed, his former boss in Brixton and, since 2012, a Croydon MP.

Council fails to spend £4m grant on climate change in 9 years

CROYDON IN CRISIS: ‘The council declared a climate emergency in 2019, but where’s the emergency response? This is a fight for survival, not a PR exercise.’ That’s according to one resident who wants to ask some pointed questions at next week’s Town Hall meeting

Croydon’s failed Mayor, Jason Perry, is to face questions at the Town Hall next week demanding to know why his council is dragging its feet over its commitments to achieving Net Zero, and has failed to deliver even modest environmental measures for this borough to do its bit to try to reduce the impact of the climate emergency.

Doing nothing is not an option: protesters have taken their ‘AMOC bomb’ around London to warn of the climate disaster

Almost £4million-worth of grants allocated to Croydon in 2016, to be used to offset the borough’s carbon emissions, remains unspent.

Today, protestors from across the capital dropped an “AMOC Bomb” outside City Hall, to draw attention to an impending climate disaster which threatens to end the Gulf Stream effect which has given the British Isles the typically mild and damp climate conditions which in the past made this part of Europe a relatively agreeable, and productive, place to live. Abaci and florists’ are next kiosks to open in ‘Allders Parade’

The not-so-big-reveal: bit by bit, Westfield are slowly bringing a bit of life back to North End

EXCLUSIVE: After the Whitgift Centre’s florist shop joined the mass exodus of stores from the town centre, Westfield prepares to open a ‘kiosk’ in the old Allders building that will be selling… flowers

Inside Croydon can reveal that the next two “kiosks” to open in Allders, where there was once a grand old-style department store, are a florists’ shop and a boutique selling Turkish-made Islamic clothing.

There has been no formal announcement as yet from the management at Westfield, the shopping mall developers who have failed to develop their promised shopping mall in Croydon for almost 14 years.

But yesterday, the artwashing hoardings came down to reveal that Isle of Flowers and Abaci are the next pair of stores to open in what Westfield are calling “Allders Parade”. Continue reading

West Croydon primary moves to connect its pupils with books

“We’re physically present but mentally absent,” according to Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, in an essay released as part of her early years education campaign, as she warns that an overload of smartphones and online tablets among our children is creating an “epidemic of disconnection” that disrupts family life.

Bookworms: pupils at Chestnut Park Primary are enjoying a new reading curriculum

And one Croydon primary is working hard to avoid such disconnections by encouraging its pupils to pick up a book instead of staring at a screen, while instilling in its pupils a lifelong love of reading, which is spreading to parents, too.

Chestnut Park Primary School in West Croydon is running something called the CUSP programme, which highlights engaging works. Parents have also been going into the school for workshops to learn more about it.

CUSP focuses on a core literature of high-quality texts with vocabulary instruction and a deep comprehension strategy to create progressive and consistent reading across the primary years. Continue reading

London’s first-time buyers looking to pay less for their homes

The average price of a home in Croydon is now more than £400,000, as a report by one property sales website suggests many potential buyers are being driven away from London’s pricier areas

The days of developers trying to sell one-bed “luxury apartment” starter homes in residential blocks for 300 grand or more may be over, as figures from housing website Zoopla published today show that London is the only region of the country where the price being paid by first-time buyers has gone down.

The overheated housing market continues to price thousands of people out of buying a home, especially in the south-east where house prices have been ridiculously over-valued since the last century.

According to figures from the Office for National Statistics, the routine 10% deposit required to buy a property in Croydon is now at least £40,000. Continue reading

Figures show how exodus from Whitgift Centre is speeding up

Dripping with irony: Superdry is one of the stores to exit the Whitgift Centre recently, leaving behind the yellow buckets

The number of empty retail units in the Whitgift Centre has increased by more than 50% in the past year, according to recent research.

Now under the management of Westfield, the Whitgift Centre was supposed to have been demolished and replaced in a £1billion-plus regeneration of Croydon town centre that was due to take place a decade ago.

Instead, Westfield, now part of Paris-based Unibail Rodamco Westfield, have managed to rip the heart out of Croydon, the flagship shopping mall being allowed to decay, driving away shoppers and their own tenants. Continue reading

Veteran car run to take a swerve past road affected by closures

Organisers of the 2025 London to Brighton Veteran Car Run have altered the route through central Croydon when the event takes place early on the morning of Sunday November 2.

Tight turn: around 400 veteran vehicles are expected to chunter through Croydon on Nov 2. Pic: Lee Townsend

The 400-or-so road-worthy museum pieces taking part in this annual rally will be giving Southbridge Road a swerve, just the day before gas engineers close the road off for mains replacement works in and around South End.

The RM Sotheby’s London to Brighton Run, to give it its official title, is one of the great celebrations of eccentric British life, setting off from Hyde Park at 7am on the first Sunday in November to provide a splendid spectacle all the way to the south coast, with the old A23 road forming the spine of the route as it trundles through Norbury, Thornton Heath, along Roman Way and under the Croydon Flyover, on to South Croydon, Purley and chugging into Coulsdon.

With the vehicles setting off one-by-one from central London, by the time they’ve chuntered up Brixton Hill and begin to arrive in Croydon, they will be coming down a road near you thick and fast. Continue reading

Ecology volunteers at Heathfield House share the apple harvest

The Croydon Ecology Centre, at the (still) council-owned Heathfield House, off Gravel Hill, held its annual Apple Day celebrations at the weekend.

Prize crop: the Croydon Ecology Centre at Heathfield House has plenty of apples to choose from at the weekend

The good turnout of locals had a massive choice of apple varieties to choose from, all freshly picked from the orchard of the once grand home of Raymond Riesco.

There were Cox’s Orange Pippin, Greasy Pippin, the Lane’s Prince Albert cooking apple, Queen Cox and American Mother all laid out in an abundant display.

There were also some tasty apple pastries and cakes, as well as homemade Seville orange marmalade and apple chutney on sale for the visitors, gardening enthusiasts and bargain-hunters. Continue reading

Ghosts that stalk our streets and the history we learn from them

Long-standing promotion: this ghost sign for E Reeve – now the House of Reeves – on the side of a house on Tanfield Road is at least 125 years old

KEN TOWL sets off to find as many ghost signs as he can

According to Historic England, ghost signs are “typically historic hand-painted advertising signs or old shop signs preserved on buildings that have since changed use”. They go on to suggest that these “faded relics can tell us much about our collective architectural, cultural and social history”.

Addiscombe ghost: the last vestiges of The Exchange can still just be made out on Lower Addiscombe Road

When a friend told me about a ghost sign just round the corner from me at 195 Lower Addiscombe Road, I thought it would be an opportunity to learn something about my neighbourhood.

You just can make out the words “The Exchange” above, at an angle, “Lower Addiscombe Road”.

Below that you can just about discern “POST OFFICE”.

The Lower Addiscombe Road Post Office today is at No311, inside the Co-op. I have only lived in the area since 2008 and it has always been there in that time.

I wonder if anyone remembers a Post Office at No195? Given the archaic style of the signage, it may have gone a long time ago. Continue reading

£3,000-a-ticket for Tory conference event and Philp turns up late

No rush… plenty of seats: pictures of the frequently half-empty main hall at the Tory conference in Manchester have betrayed the real state of the party

WALTER CRONXITE, Political Editor, on what has been a difficult few days for Croydon’s Conservatives at their party’s poorly attended conference

Running late: shadow home secretary has been subject to overt criticisms for rudeness at the Tory Pary conference

More problems for Croydon’s top Tories at the Conservative Party conference in Manchester, where Croydon South MP Chris Philp has been publicly criticised for showing up late to an event where champions of industry had paid £3,000 for their tickets.

By the day, Philp appears to resemble Alan B’stard even more. Just without the charm.

Yesterday, an audience member at one session at the conference in Manchester upbraided the shadow home secretary for disinterestedly looking at his mobile phone when someone was speaking. “I’m listening,” Philp simpered in his feeble defence.

Then, according to the Politico website’s diary, Philp turned up 20 minutes late to a business round table: entry fee, 3,000 sovs, guv. Continue reading

Now wouldn’t that be loverly?! My Fair Lady comes to Coulsdon

Some of the best-known and most-loved show tunes ever written are about to be dusted off and performed with suitable gusto, as My Fair Lady is brought to the stage of the Coulsdon Community Centre this December.

Possibly one of Theatre Workshop Coulsdon’s most ambitious productions yet, My Fair Lady is adapted from the original stage musical and Oscar-winning Hollywood film, which was based on George Bernard Shaw’s play Pygmalion, a study of transformation and social attitudes, of his time and ours.

Lerner and Loewe’s celebrated musical adaptation includes show-stopping numbers including Wouldn’t It Be Loverly, I’m Getting Married In The Morning, I Could Have Danced All Night, On The Street Where You Live and With A Little Bit Of Luck.

It’s the story of a cockney flower-girl’s transformation into the pride of London’s high society – and its unforeseen consequences.

South West London Law Centre moves out of council office

South West London Law Centres’ Croydon office has moved out of the council-owned Davis House in the town centre to a new address in the Centrale Shopping Centre.

South West London Law Centres operate across south London, providing much-needed legal advice and help, often to those who cannot afford their own lawyers.

SWLLC is one of the largest law centres in Britain and a registered charity, which operates with the support of a network of more than 400 pro bono lawyer volunteers and 40 members of staff.

They reckon that they provided £1.5million-worth of free legal advice last year.

“We work in the communities we serve, to alleviate poverty, speak for the most vulnerable and create a fairer society for all.” Continue reading

Two more Croydon town centre pubs pull down the shutters

Market changes: the Market Tavern on Surrey Street is the latest Croydon pub to close

The Market Tavern is the latest Croydon pub to be closed.

At the top of Surrey Street, the town’s historic street market, the pub was much-liked by younger drinkers who appreciated its lower prices. A Stonegate pub, the company opted not to renew the lease at the end of September.

Just a short stroll away down to South End, another pub, The Store, has also closed and is seeking a new leaseholder for the property. Continue reading

Stafford Road in Wallington to be closed for gas mains works

Parts of the A232 Stafford Road are to be closed for two weeks for gas mains replacement works, starting at the end of this month.

This is the third set of road closures for the area on or around the A23 to be confirmed for October and November, and comes in addition to similar gas mains replacement works that will see Aberdeen Road and Southbridge Road closed for much of next month, as well as Transport for London resurfacing the Purley Way south from the Fiveways Junction.

The A23 Purley Way is due to be closed overnight for 11 days, from Sunday October 12 until Thursday October 23, for the TfL works.

The notification sent to residents for the Stafford Road closures is ambiguous, but according to information on one.network, the Stafford Road closures are to take place from October 25 at the Wallington end of Stafford Road, by the junction of Woodcote Road and residential side streets such as Onslow Gardens.

One.network’s site map suggests that there are no planned works for the Fiveways Junction/A23 end of Stafford Road. Continue reading

Perry takes time out to press the flesh at Tory Party conference

Political Editor WALTER CRONXITE on the latest self-serving excursion by Croydon’s £84,000 per year part-time Mayor

Seeking support: Jason Perry is off to Manchester to get backing at the Conservative annual conference

Jason Perry is in a fight for his political career. And he is doing it at your expense.

Paid £84,000 per year as the elected Mayor of Croydon, that works out at more than £300 per day, money paid by our cash-strapped council out of your Council Tax. Which Perry has hiked by 27% since he came to office, and will probably increase by the maximum 5% from April, just before he is due to face the voters in the 2026 local elections.

And what is piss-poor Perry doing for the people of Croydon tomorrow and on Tuesday?

Absolutely nothing.

That’s because Perry is appearing at the Conservative Party’s annual conference in Manchester in a little self-serving promotional tour. Continue reading
