No, not the Met’s riot squad, but Croydon Roller Derby’s Riot Squad, who are travelling to Birmingham on September 26 to undertake one of its biggest challenges, the Tier 3 Play-offs of the UK Roller Derby Association championships.

Croydon is the newest and smallest of London’s roller derby teams.

It has already earned a reputation in the roller derby world as a force to be reckoned with. Ranked 26th in Europe and 17th in Britain, Croydon’s A-team has lost only one game in the past 12 months. But the Playoffs may just prove to be their greatest challenge yet. Continue reading

Tory councillor aids roads lobbyist expelled from UKIP

JEREMY CLACKSON, Inside Croydon’s Motoring Correspondent, has uncovered evidence that one of the borough’s most senior Tory councillors has been busily assisting a roads lobbyist to undermine efforts to make the borough’s streets safer for all

When the Labour group on Croydon Council finally got round to implementing its manifesto commitment to introduce 20mph zones, albeit in the most timid of manners, there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth from the Conservative opposition at the Town Hall.

The 20mph proposal in the north of the borough got "a very clear mandate": 52 per cent of the vote

The 20mph proposal in the north of the borough got 52 per cent of the vote

The Tories’ stance on road safety in Croydon is proving to be very contradictory.

MP Gavin Barwell has been keen to claim a central role in getting legislation to make it an offence for those using illegal drugs to drive when under the influence. Barwell used endorsements from the bereaved parents of Lillian Groves, the 14-year-old killed by a dangerous driver in New Addington, to bolster his campaign in the General Election.

But when it comes to implementing a safer speed limit across the borough, in the hope of avoiding further tragic deaths, Croydon Conservatives have been less enthusiastic.

Mario Creatura is Barwell’s “gobby factotum” in his Westminster office, who now pockets a councillor’s allowances on top of his parliamentary salary. In March this year – that is, when still hoping to win people’s votes in the election – Creatura proclaimed on behalf of the local Tories that they were not against 20mph.

Yet when it came to the crunch, Croydon’s Conservative councillors spoke against the motion and then abstained.

And Inside Croydon has discovered that Phil “Two Permits” Thomas has been liaising closely with Peter “More Faces than the Town Hall Clock” Morgan over the 20mph proposals. Continue reading

Norbury Avenue rat run re-opened and is ‘unsafe’ say cyclists

How the Norbury Avenue trial closure has been left by council workmen

How the Norbury Avenue trial closure has been left by council workmen. All pictures by Angus Hewlett

As Inside Croydon reported before the Bank Holiday weekend, Croydon Council has abandoned its Quietway scheme along Norbury Avenue without completing the intended trial period, and all done with seemingly indecent haste, if the state of the signage left behind is anything to go by (see picture right).

Norbury Avenue has long been notorious as a rat run for motorists between Thornton Heath and Norbury.

In an effort to deal with this, working with the Mayor of London’s office and the sustainability group Sustrans, the council closed the road was closed at the end of June. The trial period was to have run for three months, so that traffic could be monitored for at least a couple of weeks in September when the school run is in full-flow. Continue reading

Protest group: ‘We must never give a foothold to the Nazis’

By Stephen Aselford, chair of Croydon DPAC

On September 5, Croydon Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC) will be protesting alongside local trade unions and anti-fascists against the BNP coming to Croydon. Standing up to racism and fascism is a key concern for many disabled campaigners.

DPAC logoDPAC is a disabled people-led campaign group, set up to challenge the disproportionate impact of cuts on disabled people and known for high-profile actions such as the attempt to storm Parliament in to oppose the closure of the Independent Living Fund. We are fighting for a society built on fairness and social justice that is run in the interests of the 99 per cent and puts people before profit.

The BNP’s announcement that they are coming to Croydon to demonstrate outside Lunar House represents an attempt to stir up hatred and divide our community. Migrants were not responsible for the financial crisis. In fact, our economy and vital services that disabled people rely on, including the NHS and social care services, are dependent on migrant labour. I am proud to live in an area as diverse and vibrant as Croydon. Continue reading

AUDIO: Sako sets up Eagles to fly high after victory at Chelsea

New Palace signing Bakary Sako was a handful for Chelsea defenders

Second-half goals by Bakary Sako and Joel Ward gave Palace their third win of the league season, and dealt a rare defeat to champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge yesterday.

Derby day can offer chance for local bragging rights

BRIAN GRANVILLE, the doyen of non-league football writers, looks forward to a crunch clash at Mayfield Road, when both sets of fans will be chanting “Croydon”

There’s more than a hint that someone in what passes for a “boardroom” or the boot room at Croydon Arena drew a big sigh of relief on Saturday evening when the decision was taken to postpone Croydon FC’s Bank Holiday league fixture, due to be staged at the Mayfield Stadium against local non-league rivals AFC Croydon Athletic.

Croydon FC's Jordan Martin, left, in pre-season action

Croydon Athletic’s Jordan Martin, left, in pre-season action

It’s not exactly El Derbi madrileño or the Old Firm, it’s possibly not even as fiercely contested as Palace v Charlton. But the Croydon non-league derby was sure to be significant for the rest of the season for both clubs.

Pointless so far after four games in the league, Croydon have the compensation of still being in the FA Cup after overwhelming a fitness-short Sutton Common Rovers 5-1 and then coming from behind yesterday through an Ashley Henry-Brown 68th minute goal away at bigger club Tunbridge Wells in a 1-1 draw, to force a replay at the Arena on Wednesday evening.

But three games in five days is just too much to expect a squad of part-timers, and the world’s oldest cup competition has taken precedence – Croydon still face four matches in 11 days – so tomorrow’s derby game has been postponed until later in the season. Let’s hope they manage to re-arrange it for a date when they can maximise the number of fans who come through the turnstiles.

When they get the chance to play the derby, the game will mark another milestone on the phoenix-like recovery of AFC Croydon Athletic, from a tragic loss of football at the Thornton Heath ground in 2011, when they were known more simply as Croydon Athletic.

Lunar House demoLocal trades unionists and activists are to hold a rally outside Lunar House on September 5, as a counter-demonstration to a protest by the fascist British National Party.

Cyclists appeal after council abandons trial road closure

Disconnected Croydon, the borough that runs consultations without trying too hard to tell its residents, is soon to develop a reputation for abandoning trials midway through, before they have run their course.

Sign of the times: except the Norbury Avenue closure has been abandoned before schools return for their autumn term

Sign of the times: except the Norbury Avenue closure has been abandoned before schools return for their autumn term

The bollards in the centre of the road that blocked off traffic on Norbury Avenue have been removed, opening up the residential road as a rat run for motorists once again. What was supposed to be a three-month trial has been interrupted at the halfway point.

As a Quietways route, Norbury Avenue is an essntial link in a chain of safe bike and walk routes that connect Croydon town centre to a cycle route that should run all the way to Waterloo.

The removal of the bollards, coming a week before the schools return from their summer holidays, means that the “trial”, which was supposedly being run by our council in conjunction with the Mayor of London’s office, Transport for London and Sustrans, will not collect any useful data or reactions during a period when the route – between Norbury and Thornton Heath – is at its busiest.

Snubbed! Tricky Dicky Ottaway misses out on the Lords

Purley and Coulsdon have been snubbed. And so has Bletchingley.

Not very noble: Tricky Dicky Ottaway

Not very noble: Tricky Dicky Ottaway

“Sir” Richard Ottaway, for 23 years the disinterested MP for Croydon South, has been left out of the latest batch of peerages doled out by Tory Prime Minister David Cameron and announced today.

For such an assiduous expenses claimer as Tricky Dicky, missing out on the £300 daily attendance allowance for the House of Lords, plus exes, must be a real blow.

How will he be able to afford to keep the extensive grounds of his Bletchingley country pile in the Surrey stockbroker belt in the ship-shape fashion to which he became accustomed during his years as an MP?

And how is it that Ottaway was overlooked?

Well, the former naval officer was never really outstanding, either physically, nor as a hard-working constituency MP. So maybe Prime Minister David Cameron just forgot about him. Most of Ottaway’s former constituents in Purley and Coulsdon already have. And he only retired from the Commons in May.

Give south London under-11s free travel, says Shawcross

Primary school children in London should be allowed to use public transport for free during the summer holidays, according to a London Assembly Member who has called for those living “south of the river” to be allowed to have free train travel to make-up for the lack of Tube lines on this side of the Thames.

South London school children should get free train travel during the summer, according to Val Shawcross

South London school children should get free train travel during the summer, according to Val Shawcross

Val Shawcross, a former Labour leader of Croydon Council, made the call today so that under-11s can take advantage of the capital’s attractions and museums, especially during August, when there are lower passenger numbers.

Under-11s already get free travel on Transport for London (TfL) networks – principally the buses and Tubes.

But according to Norwood resident Shawcross, those living in south London are likely to miss out significantly compared with their north London counterparts because train companies operating on national rail routes refuse to recognise the free travel scheme. The anomaly means that south of the river under-11s are far more likely to have to pay for their travel. Continue reading

Izzard hits the right notes as David Lean turns Inside Out

The misconception that, by definition, “art house” cinemas only ever screen dull but worthy movies, often in black and white and almost certainly with subtitles over the Scandinavian dialogue, is well and truly exploded next month by the David Lean Cinema, as its largely volunteer-run programme includes a bio-pic about the Beach Boys, a screwball comedy, a film based on a Guardian cartoon strip, the latest Pixar animation and Crystal Palace supporter Eddie Izzard’s latest big screen appearance, alongside Dustin Hoffman in The Choir. Fairness Commission to stage Open Day, Sep 1

Croydon’s Opportunity and Fairness Commission is to stage an Open Day on Tuesday, September 1.

“The Open Day will be an opportunity for members of the public to directly contribute to the Commission’s work,” they announced.

Fairness commission logoThe Commission, a pet project of council leader Tony Newman, was formed last year by the incoming Labour council and provided with a generous £200,000 budget. The Commission says it will publish an interim report on the issues that matter in the borough next month, with its final report to follow in January 2016.

“Members of the public are strongly encouraged to drop in to have their voices heard.” But with the interim report due to be published just a couple of weeks later in September, it is hard not to consider that the Open Day is a form of box-ticking exercise.

Rooney proves a point as he flies on his Chinese magic carpet

Martyn Rooney looks towards the big screen in the Bird's Nest Stadium to confirm his lifetime best performance

Martyn Rooney looks towards the big screen in the Bird’s Nest Stadium this morning to confirm his lifetime best performance at the world championships

Croydon Harrier Martyn Rooney proved a point today, when the British athletics team captain stormed to a lifetime best performance in the 400 metres heats on the second day of the world championships in Beijing.

Rooney raced to 44.45sec for fourth place in the hotly contested second heat. Although outside the first three places in his race, the Briton’s was the sixth fastest time of the day and saw the man from Thornton Heath progress to the semi-finals as one of the fastest losers.

Rooney’s previous personal best had been set the last time he raced in the Bird’s Nest Stadium – in the 2008 Olympic Games. He called the Bird’s Nest track his “Chinese magic carpet” with good reason: a total of 18 men ran sub-45sec in this morning’s heats.

Yet Rooney, the European champion, was very nearly was denied the opportunity to race at these world championships.

Despite being named as team captain, 28-year-old Rooney had to go to appeal to secure a place in the individual 400 metres.

“It’s not about proving others wrong,” he said before his first-round race. “It’s about proving I was right.”

Council provides a cycle hub after removing the spokes

Only in Croydon.

A hub, without spokes: the yet-to-open Croydon Cycle Hub

A hub, but without spokes: Croydon Cycle Hub

The grand opening of a cycle hub and hire scheme at East Croydon last week had to be postponed… because of a collision on George Street between a bus and a pedestrian, which saw the road closed for several hours.

No date has yet been announced for the re-arranged ceremony, though the postponement could be seen as emblematic of Croydon Council providing a town centre “hub” for cyclists without the “spokes” of dedicated and safe cycle routes to or from it.

In Croydon in recent years, the trend has been to spend millions of pounds on road schemes which have removed or reduced bike lanes, which have made cycling in the borough less inviting, and possibly less safe.

Croydon’s contradictions on cycling are numerous and confounding.

We currently have the situation of two-way cycling being arranged to and through North End by one part of the council, while another department in Fisher’s Folly is trying to make cycling along North End illegal.

Meanwhile, cycle lanes along South End, on a main north-south route through the borough, have been removed tp make way for… car parking spaces. This project was conducted under a scheme called “Connected Croydon”. We kid you not. Continue reading

Property developer Ansari donates to Cooper and Khan

Anwar Ansari, the Croydon-based property developer who was among the leading figures behind a High Court legal action against the borough’s Labour-run council’s landlord licensing scheme, has donated tens of thousands of pounds to leading contenders in internal Labour Party elections.

Sadiq Khan: his Mayoral campaign has received £40,000 from property developers, including Croydon's Anwar Ansari

Sadiq Khan: his Mayoral campaign has received £40,000 from property developers, including Croydon’s Anwar Ansari

This week’s Private Eye reports that Yvette Cooper’s campaign for the Labour leadership is being run from offices donated by Ansari, with a value in kind of £5,000. According to the register of MPs’ interests, Cooper’s campaign has also benefited from use of other office space and a flat where her staff stay, donated by Ansari companies, worth a further £7,000.

And Property Week reports that Sadiq Khan’s London Mayoral campaign has also benefited from Ansari’s generosity, having received £9,900 from AA Homes and Housing, one of the Croydon businessman’s companies. In all, the Tooting MP’s campaign has received donations amounting to around £40,000 from multi-million pound property developers. Continue reading

Eagles fans angry as club moves to ban banners at Selhurst

Crystal Palace Football Club risked the anger of their most loyal fans when they issued a statement late last night effectively banning banners from Selhurst Park unless they had been passed for approval in advance by the club.

Banned: wit, freedom of expression and social conscience. A thing of the past at Selhurst Park

Banned: wit, freedom of expression and social conscience. A thing of the past at Selhurst Park

With Palace due to host Aston Villa at Selhurst Park tomorrow, the club statement, issued at 10pm last night, applies strict new rules on all fans’ banners “with immediate effect” and threatens a stadium ban for “any supporters putting up any unauthorised banners”.

Eagles fans have a well-earned reputation for creating a vibrant atmosphere within Selhurst Park, often off-putting to opposing sides. Much of that comes from the devoted Ultra followers in the Holmesdale end, who have earned the admiration of rival supporters for producing a series of elaborate banners, many of which display social conscience not normally associated with football, some of which have been critical of the Premier League and the inherent greed in modern football.

“It’s the end of protesting against the Premier League,” the editor of one Palace fanzine told Inside Croydon this morning. “The club will deem it ‘offensive’ for sure.”

“We’ll all be sitting in silence like Stoke and Man City fans in no time,” said another. Continue reading
